Slim over de Schelde
Real-time mobility information for Antwerp cyclists & pedestrians

The Challenge
Cyclists and pedestrians in Antwerp rely on several crossings to get from the city center to Linkeroever: the Kennedy Cycling Tunnel, the historic Sint-Annatunnel, and the Sint-Annaveer ferry.
However, these crossings occasionally face service interruptions due to maintenance or malfunctions, particularly with the elevators and escalators that make these tunnels accessible.
AWV already offered a progressive web app that provided status updates and even allowed users to receive push notifications. But the solution had limitations:
The interface needed a more intuitive and streamlined experience.
The interface was not fully responsive across devices and browsers.
The underlying technology was not future-proof, making it difficult to scale for new features like digital signage at crossings.
AWV wanted to modernize this solution to make it faster, more user-friendly, fully accessible, and ready for the future of Antwerp’s mobility network.
The Solution
Hatch partnered with AWV to design and develop a new, fully accessible mobile app and web platform: Slim over de Schelde.
Here’s what we delivered:
Real-time status dashboard showing all crossings on an interactive map.
Push notifications for users subscribed to specific crossings — notifying them instantly when a disruption occurs or when service is restored.
Custom notifications so each user can tailor notifications to their own commute.
News feed for updates on maintenance, works, and events.
Unified CMS allowing AWV staff to manage content and notifications easily, for both the app and website.
Future-ready architecture that can integrate with digital signage at the crossings and scale as new connections are added (e.g. Oosterweelverbinding).
A modern, new logo and look & feel, matching the Wegen en Verkeer branding.
The result: a smooth, intuitive experience for cyclists and pedestrians, giving them the right information at the right time.
